Building a retirement income picture

Essential versus flexible spending, the sources that can fund each, and why plans are revisited.

General education, not personalized advice. Confirm current rules at the sources below.

Essential and flexible spending

Separate what must be paid every month (housing, food, insurance, healthcare) from what can flex (travel, gifts, hobbies). The distinction guides which income sources matter most.

Matching sources to needs

Some people prefer more predictable sources for essentials, such as Social Security, a pension or certain annuities, and more flexible sources for the rest. Others weigh things differently. Each choice has costs and risks.

Annuities are insurance contracts. Guarantees, including guaranteed lifetime income benefits where available, are subject to the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Product features, fees, withdrawal restrictions, and surrender charges vary by contract.

Withdrawal order and taxes

Which accounts you draw from first can change your tax picture. Tax-deferred accounts generally require distributions starting at an age set by law. Check current IRS guidance rather than relying on a number in an article.

Revisit it

Spending shifts, markets move and laws change. Treat the plan as a document you review, not a prediction you set once.
